These two sunglasses commercials were a blast to design sound for - I had to do in-depth research on the exact sound that a particular brand of compound bow and fishing reel makes, because the client was pretty sure that the target demographic (serious hunters) would cry foul if we didn't get those sounds right.

This is a series of short video interviews (mixed with some animation) with various famous entrepreneurs, authors, and thinkers about valuable habits and practices for success in life. Aside from doing all the sound effects and final mixes, it was a fun challenge to take on the dialogue editing and "rescue", since a lot of the locations where the interviews happened were very noisy or echoey.

Unfinished Fable of the Sparrows

Music and sound effects for this subtly terrifying animation based on a metaphor at the beginning of Nick Bostrom's recent book about artificial superintelligence

The Unfinished Fable of the Sparrows

This was just awesome to work on. I started with music, composing a couple of fluid movements that rely on a mix of organic (accordion, cello, piano, percussion) and inorganic (some crazy synthesizers) sounds. Being a musician at heart, my favorite moments in sound design happen when the line between "timed sound effect" and "music" gets blurred, and this video is full of those moments where the music catches a motion or a hit so that an added sound effect doesn't really have to.

After the music was pretty set, I went through and added foley and abstract effects to emphasize the slow mood change from pastoral to terrifying that happens over the course of the video.

Mentoring Project

The Mentoring Project - Waiting

To fit with the "waiting" theme for this video, I started with the sound of a second hand on a clock ticking and brought it in and out of focus throughout the clip. Then, I designed a tempo grid based on the speed of the clock ticking, and designed the rest of the sound effects and foley for the video so that they followed the grid. The result is a subtly musical soundscape inspired by some of the backing tracks from the Bjork movie Dancer in the Dark.

This was a fun departure from a straight-up team highlight video - Juliet Zulu did a beautiful job with the "endless tunnel" aesthetic, and I did sound design to match the music and mood.

UofO Ducks Football Highlight 2011-2012

I've done 3 or 4 of these Ducks highlight reels over the years; this was the first one. These fast-paced sports videos are really intense to work on because of the amount of foley sounds I have to match up to picture, but it's always a blast to see them come together to create an impactful (pun intended) experience of the game.

This is one of my favorite composition/sound design assignments ever - the client wanted the whole video to have a really parodic, intentionally corny 80s infomercial feel. One of the reference tracks was a Tim & Eric sketch - say no more.

This was a first for me - working on an extended cinematic-style trailer for a novel called Wire to Wire. Juliet Zulu put the video together, and I was in charge of everything sound-related, from doing foley and sound design to cleaning up often hard-to-hear dialogue to sourcing music. Cool mix of literal foley-esque sounds and abstract, hallucinatory effects.

Nike LeBron 9 Videos

A couple videos from a series of clips I worked on about the Nike LeBron 9. These are primarily examples of location audio rescue - the audio of the various people talking in the video was all drastically different in quality, loudness, ambience, and tone, so I had to do as much as I could to level them all out and make them fit in the final mix.
